UGV, UAV, UUV
UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle), UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, commonly called a drone), and UUV (Unmanned Underwater Vehicle) are the three major domains of autonomous robotics, classified by the medium they operate in.
UGV β Ground
Robots that move on or below land. This is the largest and most mature category.
| Type | Examples | Autonomy Level |
|---|---|---|
| Warehouse robots | Amazon Kiva, Locus bots | Fully autonomous |
| Quadrupeds | boston-dynamics-spot | Boston Dynamics Spot]]|Boston Dynamics Spot]] |
| Humanoids | Figure 02, Unitree H2 | Teleoperated or limited autonomy |
| combat UGVs | Russian Marker, Ukrainian ground drones | Mixed β some autonomous, most teleoperated |
UAV β Aerial
Drones. The most deployed autonomous robot type globally.
| Type | Scale | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer quadcopters | DJI Mini, Mavic | Photography, surveying |
| Military drones | MQ-9 Reaper, Bayraktar TB2 | Surveillance, strike |
| Delivery drones | Zipline, Wing (Google) | Medical supplies, consumer packages |
| Swarming drones | darpa OFFSET, Chinese EW systems | Electronic warfare, coordinated attack |
UAVs have the simplest autonomy problem β air is mostly empty β which is why theyβre decades ahead of ground robots in deployment scale.
UUV β Underwater
The hardest domain. Water absorbs radio signals, so UUVs canβt rely on GPS or real-time human control.
| Type | Use Case |
|---|---|
| AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) | Ocean mapping, pipeline inspection |
| ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) | Deep-sea mining, cable repair β tethered, teleoperated-vs-autonomous |
| Naval UUVs | Mine countermeasures, submarine tracking |
Cross-Domain Convergence
The same AI models, sensors, and software stacks increasingly work across all three:
- VLA models trained on ground robot data can adapt to aerial platforms
- slam\ algorithms work on underwater sonar as well as ground LiDAR
- Swarming behaviors developed for drones are being ported to ground robot fleets
The Bottom Line
UGVs are the frontier β the hardest environment, the most complex physics, the biggest commercial opportunity. UAVs are already mainstream. UUVs are niche but strategically critical for defense and resource extraction.
