What is a Semiconductor Foundry?

A foundry is a specialized factory that manufactures semiconductor chips (integrated circuits) from silicon wafers. Unlike design houses like NVIDIA or AMD that create chip blueprints, foundries physically etch those designs onto silicon using processes measured in nanometers.

The Process

Chip manufacturing is the most complex industrial process on Earth:

  1. Design: Engineers create a chip layout (the β€œmask”) using billions of transistors
  2. Wafer fabrication: A 300mm silicon wafer goes through 500–1,000 processing steps
  3. EUV lithography: Extreme ultraviolet light etches transistor patterns at atomic scales
  4. Doping: Chemicals alter silicon conductivity to create transistors
  5. Metallization: Copper interconnects wire everything together
  6. Testing: Each chip is tested; defective ones are discarded
  7. Packaging: Good chips are cut, packaged, and shipped

A single advanced chip takes 3–4 months from wafer start to finished product.

The Geography

FoundryLocationShare of Advanced Chips (7nm and below)
TSMCTaiwan64.9% of all foundry revenue; ~90% of advanced logic
SamsungSouth Korea~15% of advanced chips
Intel FoundryUS (Arizona, Oregon)Minor; catching up to 18A (1.8nm equivalent) by 2026

Taiwan produces the chips that power edge-compute, Qualcomm RB3, and virtually every AI accelerator in a robot.

Why It’s a Chokepoint

  • Concentration: One company (TSMC), one island (Taiwan), one strait (100 miles from China)
  • Time to build: A new fab costs $20–30B and takes 4–5 years
  • Expertise: Only ~500 people worldwide can operate euv-lithography machines
  • Equipment: ASML (Netherlands) is the sole supplier of EUV machines β€” another chokepoint

Mitigations

  • CHIPS Act: US investing $52B to onshore advanced manufacturing
  • Intel expansion: Building fabs in Arizona and Ohio
  • Samsung: Expanding in Texas
  • Japan: Rapidus consortium aiming for 2nm by 2027

But none of these will match TSMC’s scale before 2028–2030.

The Bottom Line

A robot’s brain is an AI chip. That chip is made in Taiwan. Until that changes, every autonomous robot Supply Chain has a single point of failure.
